The 7 Lagoons of Ausangate offer one of the most breathtaking hiking experiences in Cusco, taking you through high-altitude mountain landscapes, glacial lakes, and spectacular views of the Ausangate snowcapped peak — all in a single day.

Overview

The 7 Lagoons of Ausangate offer one of the most breathtaking hiking experiences in Cusco, taking you through high-altitude mountain landscapes, glacial lakes, and spectacular views of the Ausangate snowcapped peak — all in a single day. This route unfolds across the Vilcanota mountain range, one of the most important chains in the Peruvian Andes, celebrated for its natural beauty and deep cultural significance to local communities. To begin this adventure, we depart from Cusco in the early morning hours heading toward the community of Pacchanta. Along the way, we pass through small Andean villages where ancestral customs are still very much alive. Upon arrival at our starting point, situated at over 4,000 m a.s.l., we enjoy an Andean buffet breakfast — the perfect fuel before setting out on the trail. Given the altitude of the route, we strongly recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for at least a day or two beforehand. We then set off on the 7 Lagoons Ausangate hike, following mountain paths surrounded by peaks, high-altitude wetlands, and glaciers. Along the way we visit some of the most stunning lakes in the area, including Qomercocha, Patacocha, Azulcocha, Otorongo Cocha, Alqacocha, and Pucacocha. Each lagoon stands out for its distinct color palette — ranging from deep blue and turquoise to emerald green — a result of the minerals dissolved in the glacial meltwater. As we make our way along the route, we also encounter alpacas, llamas, and a variety of high-Andean bird species, making the 7 Lagoons an outstanding choice for travelers seeking an authentic connection with nature through unique scenery, crisp mountain air, and picture-perfect photography spots. One of the main highlights of the Ausangate 7 Lagoons tour is the closeness to the range's glaciers, offering up-close views of the majestic Ausangate peak — a mountain revered as sacred in the Andean worldview. This excursion has become one of the most highly recommended routes for travelers who want to explore less-crowded destinations and enjoy a truly different experience in the Andes. Finally, after completing the circuit and savoring a moderate hike through stunning natural landscapes, we return to Pacchanta for a traditional buffet lunch. As an optional treat, you may also unwind in the community's natural hot springs before making the journey back to Cusco — the perfect ending to an unforgettable day at the 7 Lagoons of Ausangate. Highlights of the Ausangate Route

Ausangate Snowcapped Peak The imposing Ausangate glacier is the undisputed star of the trek. Its snow-capped summits provide not only breathtaking panoramas but also deep spiritual significance — local Andean communities regard it as a sacred mountain. Throughout the hike you'll be able to admire it from a variety of angles.

Lagoons of Ausangate Along the route you will visit several lagoons formed by glacial meltwater, including Qomercocha, Patacocha, Azulcocha, Otorongo Cocha, Alqacocha, and Pucacocha. Each one stands out for its unique hues, ranging from deep blue and turquoise to emerald green.

Community of Pacchanta The starting point of the tour and the place where you can interact with local residents who keep their traditions alive. Here you will enjoy a local breakfast and gain a deeper appreciation for life in the Andes.
